Talking therapies cover a wide range of different approaches to helping someone change the way they feel or behave by understanding how the brain works, how their thoughts, feelings and behaviours determine well they may cope in any given situation. They can help cope with mental health problems, find solutions to problems; improve confidence, overcome fears and phobias.
There are many different approaches to talking therapies, Solution focused therapy helps us move forward towards a positive outcome, Cognitive behavioural therapy helps us make the connection between certain thoughts, behaviours and actions. Human Givens approach is about meeting one’s needs. Neuro Linguistic Programming is about learning the language of your mind, and changing how we behave. Hypnotherapy addresses the subconscious mind and the way we change habits, change thoughts and behaviours on a deeper level. Mindfulness is an ancient eastern meditation system, which focuses our attention on the present moment, our breathing and how we think about any given situation.
What does treatment involve?
We start with the initial consultation where details of the problem, the history of it and what measures you have in the past, which have not helped. We then go over how the brain works, how our sleep and nutrition affect our mental state and which types of talking therapies may benefit you.
The talking therapies on offer are NOT counselling - where you talk about the problem on an ongoing basis - instead the therapist uses the wide range of therapies on a week-by-week basis to help get you to your goal of recovery. Using a relaxation CD/MP3 every day helps speed up this process as well as tools and techniques given during the sessions. The emphasis is about giving the tools to the client to take control of the problem. If hypnotherapy is required then this usually takes place for half the session.
The number of sessions needed varies from person to person, the nature of the problem and the influences around it. Some using BWRT can achieve success within one or two sessions, using CBT and mindfulness up to 18. Fears and phobias usually around the 4 – 6 session mark, and Solution focused hypnotherapy around the 6 – 12 sessions.
