Reflexology
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a non-invasive holistic complimentary therapy whose origins can be found in early civilizations of India, China and Egypt. It was introduced to the Western World by Dr. William Fitzgerald, an American who discovered that following illness, stress, injury or disease, the body is in a state of “imbalance” and vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively. Congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrors congestion or tension in a corresponding part of the body. Thus when, for example, you treat the big toes there is a related effect in the head and treating the whole foot can have a relaxing and healing effect on the whole body, thus restoring the body to a state of homeostasis (balance).
How can it help you?
Since Reflexology treats the whole person, not the symptoms of the problem, most people benefit from treatment. The therapy can bring relief to a wide range of conditions including, amongst others:
| • Back pain |
• Sleep problems |
| • Migraine |
• Hormonal imbalances |
| • Infertility |
• Digestive disorders |
| • Childbirth |
• Stress related conditions |
| • Arthritis |
|
| • M.E. and autoimmune illnesses |
What to expect on your first visit?
Your first appointment lasts an hour and a half and will begin with a consultation where you will be asked questions about your general health, medical history and lifestyle. You will then remove just your shoes and socks and lie on a comfortable couch where your feet will be examined for visual clues as to any conditions. The therapist will then gently wipe over the feet and, using a fragrance free cream, she will commence a gentle massage followed by a more specific movement targeting any problem areas. The treatment will conclude with a final massage using an appropriate essential oil leaving you relaxed and your body’s own healing mechanisms stimulated.
