Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China and other Eastern countries for thousands of years.

According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy – known as Qi – moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels beneath the skin. Qi consists of equal and opposite qualities – Yin and Yang – and when these become unbalanced, illness may result. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help restore its natural balance.

Commonly treated conditions
• Pain and joints and spine
• Headaches
• Regulation of menstrual cycle
• Some types of infertility
• Anxiety

What does treatment involve?
Your first visit will involve a consultation to assess your general state of health, in order to identify the underlying pattern(s) of disharmony and give you the most effective treatment. The acupuncturist will feel your pulses on both wrists and will observe the structure, colour and coating of your tongue. This initial consultation lasts about 90 minutes.

A treatment session lasts about 1 hour. The number of treatments required depends on the individual diagnosis. Some change is usually felt after six treatments. Normally you are recommended weekly treatment at first, although some conditions may need more frequent attention such as musculoskeletal pain and shingles.

Our acupuncturist is always available to discuss whether acupuncture is suitable for you.
